According to the Threat Analysis Group of Google some Russian hackers attempted to attack the networks of the NATO. It also appears that the military of “more Eastern European countries”. Let’s find out all the details together.
Russian hackers attempted to attack NATO networks
L’Google’s Security Research Unit said the Russia-based threat author known as Coldriverpreviously kicked off a phishing campaigns of the credentials against different ONG based in United States; i military of a Balkan country and also a defense contractor based in Ukraine.
Furthermore, the research unit found that the perpetrator of the threat (often also referred to as Calisto) he threw campaigns aimed at a NATO center of excellence. Google also detected ad attacks some Eastern European military. Google stated:
The author sent these campaigns using newly created Gmail accounts to non-Google accounts, so the success rate of these campaigns is unknown. We have not observed any Gmail accounts successfully compromised during these campaigns.
NATO’s centers of excellence are international military organizations that train leader e specialists of NATO members and partner countries. They cover one wide range of sectors such as civilian-military operations, cyber defense, military medicine and energy security.
NATO says that it does not directly finance these centers “Nor are they part of the NATO command structure.” Google did not specify as a center of excellence was targeted by Coldriver.
Last month, a NATO official said a cyberattack on one of its member states could trigger Article 5. The official said:
We will not speculate on how serious a cyber attack would have to be to trigger a collective response. Any response could include diplomatic and economic sanctions, cyber measures, or even conventional forces, depending on the nature of the attack.
