Samsung vs Mpeg LA.
The company that manages and distributes licenses on the MPEG standard sued Samsung Electronics GmbH, the German branch of the Korean giant, addressing the District Court of Dusseldorf. The reason? The patent infringement on HEVC video encoding.
According to what was reported by Mpeg LA, Samsung was the licensor and licensee of the HVEC codec. “Was” why these rights expired in March 2020. Despite this, however, it would seem that Samsung Germany has continued to see smartphones, tablets and televisions that use the infamous codec.
So the electronics giant was wrong?
In reality, the matter is not that simple. Samsung Electronic GmbH appears in the list of licensees of the HEVC codec of another license distributor, Access Advance.which holds a license for the Main and Main10 profiles.
In short, it seems that Samsung has simply decided to turn to another body.
Of course, the last word will now lie with the Dusseldorf court.
