The leaflets still represent less than 1% of all smartphone sales, many users are still not convinced. But Samsung wants to make foldables truly mainstream, a vision that goes beyond just smartphones.
Indeed, GDNet Korea seems to indicate that Samsung is working on foldable laptops, tablets and monitors. Which other companies have already launched, albeit with prices currently out of reach for most consumers (especially the older ones).
Most of the folding laptops released (last year both Lenovo and Asus launched one) currently have prices well above the high end of the market – we are talking about prices well over two thousand euros. Samsung could settle on this headband to attract technology enthusiasts, but without reaching the majority of potential customers.
The question mark also remains about the resistance of the folding technology. Monitors, laptops and tablets have longer lifetimes than smartphones. And although the tests promise years of resistance, there are several doubters who prefer to wait a little longer.
Samsung’s first foldable should be next Galaxy Tab S9which may have a variant called Galaxy Tab Fold. So already this year we will see if Samsung has really decided to focus on this sector.
