The Samsung company launched the SSD 990 EVO, the newest addition to its consumer SSD lineup, designed to offer superior performance, energy efficiency and interface flexibility. The announcement was made on January 23, 2024, underlining Samsung’s commitment to providing advanced storage solutions. This new NVMe SSD is designed to enhance everyday computing experiences, which include activities such as gaming, work and photo/video editing.

The SSD 990 EVO was created to adapt to consumer needs, combining innovation and practicality. Performance is significantly improved compared to the previous model, the 970 EVO Plus, with an increase of up to 43%. Sequential read speeds reach up to 5,000 MB/s, while write speeds reach up to 4,200 MB/s. Random read and write speeds are also improved, reaching a maximum of 700K and 800K IOPS operations respectively.
The adoption of Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology allows a direct connection to the host processor’s DRAM, ensuring optimal performance even in the absence of DRAM in the system. This results in a significant increase in game loading speed and access to large files for users migrating from traditional SSD drives. Energy efficiency has been improved by up to 70% compared to the previous model, allowing for longer use on PCs without worries about battery life. Modern Standby support offers an instant on/off function with uninterrupted Internet connectivity, ensuring you receive notifications even in low-power states.
