Shaman King is a manga by Hiroyuki Takei published from 1998 to 2004 in the weekly magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. It was later collected in 32 tankōbon released from December 3, 1998 to January 5, 2005. In 2017, the Kōdansha publishing house purchased the rights to the series and relaunched it, first digitally and later in paperback. The definitive edition consists of 35 tankōbon. Shaman King and the history of its anime adaptations
The first anime series based on Shaman King is composed of 64 episodes (with 3 summary specials) and it aired on TV Tokyo from 2001 to 2002. The series adapts the first 90 chapters of the manga, and then continues with an original plot. In 2020, it was announced that there would be a new anime adaptation of all the Shaman King volumes. The anime was then broadcast on TV Tokyo from 2021 to 2022. Netflix then purchased the international rights to the work. The series has a total of 52 episodes.
Shaman King, plot and meanings
Shaman King is a controversial and very complicated manga to adapt into anime. Actually the story has a fairly simple startcould be defined as almost banal: a group of characters is formed in which there are rivals who become friends, a great villain to face and a tournament to climb. The narrative is almost childish, especially since the characters are all kids, but little by little it manages to drag the viewer into a much deeper story than it seems on the surface. In Shaman King fights are just a way like any other to stage clashes of ideals, cults, beliefs and cultures. What really matters in Shaman King are the feelings of the characters and the messages they convey, which are also of some depth. It is a very particular story, where the protagonist is almost the means that moves the other characters rather than the one who creates the story himself.
