Film and music world says goodbye Jane Birkin, found dead aged 76 at her Paris home
Jane Birkin was the protagonist of unforgettable films, interpreter of very famous songs, a woman who gave her name to a very desired and very expensive bag and who entered the collective imagination. She died at 76 years old the actress, singer and director, icon of contemporary pop culture. Birkin was found dead in her Paris home.
Born in London on December 14, 1946, Jane Birkin became one of the symbols of the legendary Swingin’ London, celebrated and made immortal by a topless scene by Michelangelo Antonioni, who in 1966 wanted her in his Blow Up. The one in the Italian director’s film was Birkin’s third cinematic appearance, who had made his debut in 1965 in Not everyone has it by Richard Lester. She was then married to the musician John Barry (that of the music of 007), with whom he had a first daughter, Kate, born in 1967 and died in 2013.

In 1968, on the set of the French film Slogan, Jane Birkin met Serge Gainsbourgand between them immediately love and passion: the Gainsbourg-Birkin couple, always at the center of public attention and gossip for the various excesses, lasted until 1980. In addition to legendary records, and songs such as the scandalous and famous I love you…me neither the couple was also born Charlotte Gainsbourg, also an actress, singer and model, who just recently produced a documentary about the mother entitled Jane by Charlotte. After splitting from Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin had an affair with the director Jacques Doillonfor which she starred several times and with whom she had a third daughter in 1982, Lou Doillon, who also became a model, singer and actress.
Jane Birkin has also inextricably linked her name, indeed her surname, to a legendary Hermes bag, made especially for her and which has become a cult object all over the world, the Birkin Bag. On the musical front, Jane Birkin has recorded numerous albums, the latest dated 2020, ranging between various musical genres, and collaborating with artists such as Michel Legrand, Francoise Hardy, Brian Molko of Placebo, Paolo Conte, Manu Chao, Beth Gibbons, Bryan Ferry and Caetano Veloso.
