The first image of Sonic 3 shows us Shadow, the famous rival of the blue hedgehog who will return in the sequel in the role of main villain, further expanding the cinematic universe based on the Sonic videogame saga
Now that the strike of the American actors’ union SAG-AFTRA is over, Paramount Pictures has shared online the first image of Sonic 3 showing Shadow, the rival of the blue hedgehog, thus announcing that it has resumed production of the film which should arrive at the end of 2024, specifically the December 20, 2024. The confirmation comes from the post shared by SonicMovie’s X profile, with the release date of the film in the caption and a small taste of the anti-hero Shadowa new character that should replace Dr. Eggman as the villain, after Jim Carrey’s abandonment of the project once filming of Sonic 2 was finished.

A glimpse of Shadow in the first image of Sonic 3
Shadow’s arrival on the big screen had been anticipated by Sonic 2 post-credits scene, where the American government creates a weapon that can take on the protagonist Sonic. The weapon in question is precisely Shadow, which suggests that the character will be the villain of the third film. The character’s arrival was later confirmed by screenwriters Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Wittington. Shadow is one of the most beloved characters in the blue hedgehog video game saga and Paramount Pictures wanted to delight us with this first image of Sonic 3 where they show Shadow (or at least partially). Next to the clapperboard, we see two hands clenched into fists, two arms with black fur and the iconic red and white shoes. We don’t know any other details about the antihero’s arrival, nor do we know who the actor who will voice the character will be.
The possible plot of Sonic 3
The plot of the third Sonic movie is still under wraps, but we have some clues that make us speculate what we’ll see in the new chapter. As we have already said, Jim Carrey has unfortunately abandoned the franchise, this would give much more space to Shadow than will have an important role in the third film. We also know that the events of the third film take place chronologically after those of the Knuckles series which will arrive on Paramount+ in early 2024. In the series, Knuckles will mentor Deputy Sheriff Wade Ripple, played by Adam Pally, and both characters will reappear in Sonic 3. Ben Schwartz e Colleen O’Shaughnessey they will return to voice Sonic and Tails respectively and will also return alongside them James Marsden e Tina Sumpter, Sonic’s adoptive parents. He will return to directing once again Jeff Fowler, already director of the first two films. Sonic 3 will hit theaters on December 20, 2024.
