In the 1980s Stephen King was at the top of the literary charts. So he tried to direct a film as a director, but it didn’t end well. Stephen King hates the only movie he ever directed
Stephen King exploded into the literary world in the 1970s with his debut novel Carrie and hasn’t stopped since. He seemed to be unstoppable. His books were all best sellers, so Hollywood heard the call. Unfortunately, as often happens adaptations have not always been well received and have not always been a success at the box office. So the writer thought of trying to direct a film adaptation himself. However, one must consider that the writer knew nothing about cinema. In fact the result of the film was Maximum Overdrive a stupid B-movie about killer trucks.
Maximum Overdrive, Stephen King’s experience as a director
The premise is quite simple. The Earth crosses the tail of a comet and so the machines go crazy and start killing. King had no idea about the materialbut he knew it was trashy and that was exactly what he wanted. He wanted there to be a lot of action, that it was fast paced and didn’t need a lot of dialogue. After pre-production King arrived on set in 1985 and realized that what he knew about cinema was very little. Furthermore, at that time King had a drug problem. As if that wasn’t enough, he found himself surrounded by a crew who spoke Italian, a language he didn’t understand. However, he still finished what he started even though he was freaked out the whole time and didn’t understand what he was doing. As they wanted to demonstrate upon its release Maximum Overdrive flopped at the box office and was panned by critics. Now the author has come to disown the film, it is impossible to deny that he did not do a good job, however he doesn’t completely rule out the idea of trying to direct again. Making Maximum Overdrive was a learning experience, however, and one day she may decide she wants to direct an adaptation of one of his novels.
