Super Mario: from Miyamoto’s idea to a true custom phenomenon
Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario is a character who originally appeared as a carpenter in the 1981 arcade video game Donkey Kong, a platform game that conquered arcades in those years to the point of earning several sequels and spin-offs. Among these was also Mario Bros., the arcade video game released in 1983 that introduced the character of Luigi and which started the birth of the best-selling video game franchise of all time. From 1985 to today, the Mario series, officially become a plumber, has undergone a remarkable evolution strongly conditioned by the 3D debut of Super Mario 64, followed a few years later by Super Mario Sunshine, two of the most loved chapters of the saga.
However, the transformation was not only graphic, the game mechanics themselves underwent an evolution, superimposing the iconic setting on platforms with puzzle nuances, more dynamic fights and various elements that led the Mario series to fearlessly explore different genres and styles . Super Mario Kart confirms it, the frenetic racing video game on two and four wheels signed by Nintendo and the various sports titles that see Mario and his friends as protagonists confirm it. Over the years, in fact, many secondary characters have joined the hopping plumber, even managing to conquer entire video games dedicated to them. From Princess Peach with her umbrella to Toad and his dioramas, from the baby dinosaur Yoshi to Mario’s nemesis: Wario, there are countless adventures and ideas that have accompanied generations of gamers and inspired the new film arriving in theaters on 5 April.
