After the success of the first film and over a billion in takings, Super Mario Bros 2 is set for release in theaters in April 2026
The first Super Mario movie has grossed over $1 billion at the global box office and it was inevitable that Nintendo would greenlight a sequel. And in fact, legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto recently announced that the next Mario movie is already in the works, with a release scheduled for April 2026.
In a new video, Shigeru Miyamoto by Nintendo e Chris Meledandri from Illumination Entertainment have shared updates on the upcoming film centered on the famous plumber. Meledandri revealed that Illumination Studios in Paris is currently developing the script for the sequel under the direction, once again, of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
Super Mario Bros 2: release set for 2026
The release date of the film is set for April 3, 2026 in the United Statesie in many other global markets. In the following weeks, it will also arrive in “select territories” around the world. Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator of Mario and other iconic Nintendo intellectual properties, promised that the new film will have a brilliant and entertaining story that will further expand the universe established in the first cinematic chapter.
With the November announcement of a live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo is evidently aiming to significantly expand its presence on the big screen. After the resounding success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the company decided to take advantage of the favorable moment and ride the wave of fan enthusiasm. The Zelda film will be directed by Wes Ball, director of the Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and produced by Avi Arad and Shigeru Miyamoto himself. Unfortunately, at the moment there are no further details on this highly anticipated film adaptation.
