Il Ministry of the Interior introduced some innovations regarding the Electronic Identity Card. For access to Public Administration sites, it will no longer be necessary to have a mobile phone with NFC technology available to physically read the card. It can be used as it is SPIDvia app.
News arrived: the electronic identity card finally replaces the SPID
A few days ago the news was made public: the electronic identity card can finally replace the SPID, according to what was stated by the Ministry of the Interior.
The reference site has been updated with new features. The most important of which is the possibility for the user to activate your CIE credentials online (level 1 and 2). Using them then to use the online services of the Public Administration.
Electronic identity card, the different levels used
Furthermore, it must be emphasized that the card replaces the SPID in all respects, without having to have it physically, which is only required in particular cases. Until now, it only exploited the level 3, the most difficult to use. This because required verification of the presence of the card via NFC. Then through an external reader which could be a smartphone or an interface to be connected via USB to the computer.
This level still exists, but it is not necessary for most services related to public administration where the simple recognition of digital identity is enough.
What are they used for? levels 1 and 2? These are the levels most used today, especially level 2. The first in fact requires only the matching of username and password. The second username, password and a third factor which can be a code sent to the mobile phone.
Modern technology, with biometric authentication of smartphones, has made it possible to manage level two credentials by scanning a codice QR and authenticating access via biometric scanning, or FaceID for Apple or fingerprint for Android. Exactly what is being done today with SPID.
It will therefore be sufficient to frame the QR code with the CieID app, updated for both iOS and Android, and it will not be necessary to have the card at hand. What are the steps to take to access the CIE?
What are the steps to take?
There are essentially two steps to take. The first is the CIEid app certification which is linked to the single device for security reasons, a bit like bank apps, the second is the activation of level 1 and 2 credentials from the site.
The card can be registered by simply placing it on the back of the phone, both iOS and Android, thus taking advantage of NFC data reading. The 8-digit pin code will then be entered, 4 received when submitting the application and 4 arrived by post together with the identity card.
Pay attention to the PIN
One of the problems, and many will have understood it immediately, is the “pin”: few have the whole pin, many have almost certainly lost it over the years. If until now it was necessary to go to the municipal offices to request a new pin, the updated site also allows you to recover the PUKan operation that takes about 48 hours.
Therefore, the Electronic Identity Card) it can do exactly what the SPID doesindeed, thanks to the third level of security, it also allows the digital signature of important documents.
