The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the US guarantor, today formalized a fine of no less than 245 million dollars against Epic Games for unfair practices in Fortnite.
The provision refers to a series of involuntary purchases made by players, many of these minors and without parental consent.
What did Fortnite do to deserve the fine?
The faults of the company would be attributable to one “counter-intuitive, inconsistent and confusing button configuration”, which has led to unwanted purchases. The FTC also gave notice to Epic Games of review your system regarding microtransactions.
In addition to getting players to make in-game purchases, Epic Games is also accused of blocking users who objected to unintentional purchases. We recall that last year Epic had already agreed to pay another fine from the FTC, following the violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. With today’s provision, the total amount of the sanctions exceeds half a billion dollars.
The supervisory authority explained that the money from today’s fine will be used to reimburse customers.
