Two automotive giants, Rolls-Royce e Hyundai Motor Group announce their intention to collaborate to bring 100% electric motorization. Hydrogen fuel cell technology in the advanced air mobility (AAM) market. The partnership leverages the expertise of Rolls-Royce in the field of aviation and certification. Hyundai Motor Group’s technologies and industrialization capacity in the field of hydrogen fuel cells.
Both companies share the vision to become a leader in the AAM market. Most importantly, they provide battery and fuel cell electric solutions to the urban air mobility (UAM) and regional air mobility (RAM) markets and by developing sustainable aviation.
A historic ceremony
The signing ceremony took place at the stand of Supernal al Farnborough Airshow, with the participation of Warren East, CEO of Rolls-Royce, Grazia Vittadini, Chief Technology and Strategy Officer. Rob Watson, President of Rolls-Royce Electrical, as well as Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group.
Jaiwon Shin, President and Head of AAM Division of Hyundai Motor Group. Jaeyong Song, Vice President of AAM Division of Hyundai Motor Group.
“We are delighted to partner with Rolls-Royce to leverage their aviation and certification expertise to accelerate the development of hydrogen fuel cell power systems.”
So Hyundai has successfully supplied hydrogen fuel cell systems to the global automotive market and is now exploring the feasibility of electric and hydrogen power technologies in aerospace.
Rolls-Royce and Hyundai Motor Group, the future is electric
We believe this is the key technology to support the global aviation industry’s goal of zero-carbon flying by 2050, ”said Jaiwon Shin, President of Hyundai Motor Group.
However, Rob Watson, President of Rolls-Royce Electrical, comments: “We are delighted to partner with Hyundai Motor Group, which offers us a valuable opportunity to build using the skills each company brings with them from the aerospace and automotive sectors.
The advanced air mobility market offers great commercial potential and this collaboration supports our shared ambitions to be a leader in the advanced air mobility market. It is also another demonstration of Rolls-Royce’s role in delivering solutions. They enable passengers to travel sustainably and will help ensure net zero carbon emissions by 2050 ”.
The benefits of using a hydrogen fuel cell system in a fully electric overhead drive system. They consist in the fact that it is a zero-emission on-board energy source. It is quiet and reliable, allows for scalability of the power offer and flight range over long distances.
Hyundai partners with Rolls-Royce to bring hydrogen fuel cells. Storage systems and infrastructure in aerospace markets and to advance this technology in Hyundai’s RAM vehicles and Rolls-Royce’s all-electric and hybrid power systems.
Most importantly, last year Rolls-Royce announced a path to net zero carbon emissions. Its electrical technology is one of the ways the company is contributing to the decarbonisation of critical parts of the global economy. Rolls-Royce is committed to ensuring that its new products are compatible with net zero carbon emissions operations. By 2030 and that all its products are compatible with net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Earlier this year Hyundai Motor Group announces its AAM corporate roadmap. This includes the UAM and RAM segments to offer air mobility solutions. This eco-friendly for people within and between cities. Hyundai Motor Group’s US-based Supernal unit aims to begin commercial services. UAM operations in the United States in 2028, while Hyundai Motor Group plans to launch RAM services in the decade 2030.
