At the end of September we already learned of the date on which The Game Awards 2021 will be held: it is an event that has been going on annually for some time, and for better or worse it is now considered among the most relevant video game awards of the videogame industry, which in addition also brings to the fore some very important announcements about new upcoming games. While last year The Game Awards 2020 necessarily had to be held online, without an audience to attend, this year will be different: it will return to live mode at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and Geoff Keighley, creator of the whole show, said it will be a “Global celebration of videogame culture”.

Also this year’s edition will be able to count on the appearance of prominent figures within the industry, together with the actual award ceremony and an orchestra to accompany the programming. Presenting the details of the show on the Epic Games Store website, Keighley admits he learned a few things from the previous edition, recording up to 83 million spectators: the greatest interest of the public has been increasingly overwhelming towards video games.
Geoff is now aware of this, and claims that The Game Awards 2021 will be there an impressive number of new game announcements due out in 2022 and 2023, and some will be shown in the now iconic world premiere of the show. According to the conductor, we can expect between 40-50 titles to be seen. Despite this, it seems that there will be a much larger number than usual of trailers related to video games but which will not be such, such as TV series or films inspired by them or that recreate their stories.

The potential provided by the PS5 and Xbox Series X, Keighley says, has only been touched upon yet on a superficial level, and what will be shown on the show will be quite astounding, reminding people how the best of the industry is yet to come. With all the big games postponed, this year the awards ceremony will see a more balanced competition between the categories, and the latter could also be more diversified in subsequent editions.
Finally, Geoff expresses an interest in expanding into a type of “metaverse” that is emerging in recent times with Microsoft, Facebook, Epic Games, Apple and many other technology companies, bringing the possibility to see the broadcast also within virtual worlds. In any case, a possible involvement with NFTs is categorically excluded.
