An almost obligatory category, but only “almost”: Geoff Keighley considered the award for “Best Remake” for the Game Awards 2023

No “Best Remake” at the Game Awards 2023: Geoff Keighley explains why
“It’s generally live services [a venire nominati]”, goes on Keighley, “but this year we have Cyberpunk 2077, and when you ask why… well, because of the huge improvements over the base game, with version 2.0 and Phantom Liberty. That’s why it’s in the category.” So what about remakes? “The other thing I always get asked is why we don’t have a category for best remake or best remaster. We talked about it. I guess the question is, are there five better ones every year?” (Now yes, ed.) “There are years when there are some and this year we had some great ones, like Resident Evil 4 which was nominated for game of the year. Dead Space is another example, and we’ve had others. But at this point shouldn’t they be nominated for game of the year?” However, Keighley reiterated how controversial the various categories are, including that for “Best Supporting Actor” which earned the ceremony predictable comparisons with the Oscars.
