STIGA, world leader in the production and distribution of garden care machinery and equipment, has launched a revolutionary project to change our relationship with nature and the green spaces that surround us. Is called The Garden Sounds and is a collection of six pieces of music composed with the voices of plants, thanks to a technology that transforms the frequencies emitted by the leaves into melodies audible to the human ear. The album was recorded on 100% eco-friendly vinyl, made with recyclable material and powered by renewable energy.
The vinyl represents the final stage of the project #MyPatchOfGreen, presented at Fuorisalone 2023 in Milan, where STIGA created an engaging interactive installation that allowed visitors to listen to and play plants. The project aims to make us reflect on the importance of protecting and enhancing every garden, large or small, as a precious resource for our planet.
How the music of plants is born
Plants are living organisms that contain a lot of water and are therefore excellent conductors of electricity. The movement of the water inside the leaf generates frequencies which are different and unique to each plant and which represent its “voice”. To make these voices audible, STIGA collaborated with the Milanese musician and sound designer Andrea Baroldi, who used an electrode device to transmit a very low impact electric discharge, harmless to the plant, and to appreciate its electric variation. This variation was then interpreted and translated into harmonic sounds, creating original and suggestive melodies.
The Garden Sounds
After the success of the installation at Fuorisalone 2023, STIGA wanted to make the #MyPatchOfGreen project even more innovative and sustainable. He thus accomplished Greenylthe first vinyl record ever produced with the voices of plants.
The vinyl contains six pieces of music inspired by six different plants. The tracklist is as follows:
- Climbing Ivy (Hedera Helix)
- Blooming Tulip (Tulipa)
- Pale Iris (Iris Pallida)
- Night Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia)
- Laurestine Dream (Viburunum Tinus)
- Spontaeneous Grass (Poaceae)
The songs alternate ethereal and ambient atmospheres with more incisive rhythms. The vinyl is a one of a kind limited edition, with a beautiful cover made by Matteo Cibic. The vinyl production process is completely powered by renewable energy, which allows us to limit gas emissions.
The digital tracks are available for free on Spotify and on the other main music streaming platforms.
