Apple has not yet announced the iPhone 14, but rumors about the 2023 series of smartphones are already beginning to circulate on the Net. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, theiPhone 15 Pro Max will have a periscope lens for improved optical zoom. For those unfamiliar with the subject, periscope lenses rely on a prism that reflects light off multiple internal lenses at 90 degrees to the camera sensor. This allows the lens length to be much longer than a telephoto lens, which results in a much better optical zoom.
iPhone 15 Pro Max will have an improved optical zoom
Interesting updates on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to Kuo, Apple’s high-end smartphone will have a new periscope lens, while the Pro model will retain the normal telephoto lens for optical zoom. The analyst states that the 1/3 ″ sensor will have 12 MP resolution with f / 2.8 aperture, sensor shift stabilization and up to 6x optical zoom. Features that seem to also belong to the Pro and Pro Max models of the iPhone 16 series. Indeed, according to Kuo, the periscopic lens of the 16 series will be roughly the same as presented by the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
If the rumors were true, this would mean that Apple will once again limit its most innovative features to the top of the range of the series. iPhone 12 Pro Max was the only model with a larger sensor in the wide angle lens and sensor shift stabilization. But the 2.5x optical zoom telephoto lens was also exclusive to the Pro Max model. And before that, the iPhone 6 Plus was the only model with optical image stabilization. In short, the iPhone Pro features increasingly noteworthy features, also by virtue of the idea of increasing the gap with the standard models.
Beyond this, it is clear that a periscope lens has a higher production cost, so it can only be associated with the top of the range – naturally the most expensive – of the series. Kuo predicts that more smartphone manufacturers will adopt periscope lenses in the coming years, which should increase demand and production for these components, thus making them cheaper in the future. Meanwhile, this will remain the flagship feature of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
