The Marvels is the worst grossing ever for a Marvel Studios film with a resounding flop at the box office
Disney finally stood up White flagand concluded its fourth weekend of global box office exploitation by announcing that it will no longer report global box office figures for The Marvels.
Costing more than 220 million dollars, the cinecomic slipped to eleventh place in the United States during the weekend that just ended, with just 2.4 million dollars earned. A month after its release, the film by Nia DaCosta it closed its run with $80 million in the United States and $197 million worldwide. The hope was that it would hold up well through Thanksgiving and then the Christmas holidays, but apparently Disney itself had to surrender to reality.
The flop of The Marvels: the worst grossing in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Several cinemas, obviously, will continue to show the film until the end of the year, but stopping to communicate the data implies that expectations on takings are close to zero. At the end of the run, The Marvels will have achieved the sad record of the worst grossing ever for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a title held so far by The Incredible Hulk 2008 which grossed $264 million worldwide. At the moment The Marvels is also the first Marvel film not to have reached $100 million in the US. It should be remembered, however, that With 33 films released in theaters and nearly $30 billion in global grosses, the Marvel franchise is far from over. However, in 2023 another cinecomic from the studio recorded disappointing receipts: Ant-Man and the Wasp collected only 476 worldwide. Guardians of the Galaxy – Vol 3, on the other hand, made almost double. Expectations for the MCU were then created following the release of the second season of Loki, of excellent quality and which could represent a new starting point for the franchise. We’ll see if this will be the case or whether it will be a final swansong.
