The review of the REDMAGIC 7S Pro: the smartphone that becomes a portable console

By now we have learned to know and love the products Redmagic focused on the world of gaming and for this reason, appreciated by many experts, gamers and by us. After the launch of the Redmagic 7 Pro occurred this year, we did not expect the company to want to raise the bar again, but here we are with the new Redmagic 7S Pro and this is its review.

Like the previous model, even the Redmagic 7S Pro is entirely designed for gamers and aims to become a real portable console. The features are certainly not lacking but will he be able to satisfy both the gaming mechanics and those typical of a smartphone?

Let’s find out!

Our review of the REDMAGIC 7S Pro

The already vivid Redmagic 7 family is enriched with the new 7S and 7S pro models. Here we will analyze the Redmagic 7S Pro that reaches a new level (it is appropriate to say), compared to the previous model. We analyzed the Redmagic 7 in our review and were pretty satisfied, but what will there be to add to an already excellent smartphone?

Let’s start with order.

Data sheet

  • Dimensions: 166.27 x 77.1 x 9.98 mm
  • Weight: 235 grams
  • Display: 6.8″ AMOLED
  • Resolution: 1080 x 2400 pixel
  • Processor: Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1
  • RAM: 12 GB
  • Memory: 256 GB (not expandable)
  • Rear camera: 64 Mp + 8 Mp + 2 Mp
  • Front camera: 16 Mp
  • Battery: 5000 mAh
  • System operational: Android 12 Redmagic OS 5.5

The Redmagic 7S Pro does not differ aesthetically from the previous model. We are faced with a smartphone from important dimensions and weight. We are talking about 166.27 x 77.1 x 9.98 mm for a weight of 235 gramsboth far above average to support the demanding performance of the latest video games.

The back of the smartphone is characterized by the particular futuristic motif now Redmagic’s workhorse. The photographic set, consisting of three cameras (which we will analyze later) and the flash, is located in the center, on the military-like gray pattern of the Obsidian model used for this review. The right side of the smartphone is occupied by the classic volume buttons and the shutdown button but we also find the shoulder triggerstwo touch sections placed on the extreme sides that can become two more buttons while gaming, just like a controller’s triggers.

On the left side we find a single physical switch which, instead of activating and deactivating silent mode, activates the gaming mode that we will analyze later. In the lower area of the smartphone we find theType-C input for battery chargingthe double sim entrance and auscita speaker DTS:X Ultra Surround. We find a second speaker output on the upper side as well as a much appreciated one 3.5mm Jack inlet.

Inside the package we find, in addition to the smartphone, a protective cover, the instruction booklet and a 65W Fast Charghing charger.

The smartphone mounts a chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1the latest Chip model of the company enhanced compared to the previous one. The “Plus” translates into an even 30% higher CPU efficiency than the Redmagic 7 Pro, essential for getting the most out of video games. In this regard, we find a new version of the cooling system with the ICE 10.0 Multi-Dimensional Cooling System which is supported, once again, by a fan that can be activated at our discretion, during gaming or while charging.

Each element is mainly designed for video games as well as the large 6.8 “AMOLED display, a real feast for the eyes. The convenience of the screen during gaming sessions is also given by theabsence of the notch as the front camera is located below the screen. Here, in the lower part, we also find the fingerprint reader which also acts as a meter heart rate.

Concludes the whole wide 5000mAh battery with GaN Fast Charge support with the 65W charger included in the package.

The cameras, both front and rear, remain unchanged from the previous model. We are talking about 64 Mp + 8 Mp + 2 Mp for the rear camera and 16Mp for the selfie camera. Compared to the average of the models on the market, the graphics sector does not achieve excellence. the Redmagic 7S Pro is in fact designed mainly for video games, competitive or not.

Modalità Gaming: it’s Redmagic time!

And it is precisely here that the smartphone gives its best, especially once you have entered the gaming mode. The side switch turns the smartphone into a real game console pausing (obviously depending on your needs) all those functions that make a phone such. No more boring calls, messages or notifications, just and exclusively video games.

In this mode you will have easy access to the installed games in your Redmagic and you will be able to observe features such as game time, saved screenshots, specific options for popular games, and so on. Among the options we will be able to choose many elements such as the sampling rate of the touch, the sensitivity, the smoothness of the finger, the audio quality and so on. Everything is designed to give you the best performance whether you are playing an FPS, a MOBA or a racing title.

In this mode we could also select gods plugin that will help us in game as a quick stopwatchfor example to keep enemy skill cooldowns at bay, the 4D Shock to feel the vibration depending on the actions in the game, the survey mode to zoom in on the lens and many more. The potential is endless to get the best out of your games.

Our test of the REDMAGIC 7S Pro

For the review of this Redmagic 7S Pro, we tested its potential for about 3 weeks by taking it on the road with us to TwitchCon 2022. Premise to do before starting: this smartphone is big and heavy, much more than the average of the models on the market (235 grams versus 173 grams of our everyday iPhone 13). These dimensions and sizes are obviously preparatory to what the smartphone was designed for: gaming.

And in this field we have never seen anything more effective than this Redmagic 7S Pro. In every video game tested, from Wild Rift a PUBG Mobile, da Apex Legends a Pokémon Unite, the performances were always at the top, including the visual ones. The AMOLED screen it is a real pleasure for the eyes and the video-audio mix that is created with the double speaker is something exceptional. This mix is also extremely useful for watching videos and TV series. In no case did the smartphone show signs of stuttering or failure of any kind and believe us, we put it to the test during our trip.

The 5000mAh battery is more than enough to make it through the day with a classic use but if you think you can play it from morning to night on a single charge, you are wrong. Video games, especially the most recent ones, absorb more battery than everyday use and after a couple of hours of games you may find yourself forced to recharge your smartphone. Luckily 65W fast charging does its duty and will allow you to charge your smartphone from 0 to 100% in just over half an hourjust long enough to take that break!

The magic of RedMagic Studio

A separate word must be given for the RedMagic Studio which proved particularly useful in our daily streamer life (already follow Techprincess on Twitch, RIGHT !?). Thanks to the functionality on your phone and the app that you can download on your PC, it is possible to mirror the game you are playing on mobile on your computer. We used this little magic to stream our Wild Rift games without the slightest problem, without lag or data loss (obviously the internet connection available must also be taken into consideration). 10 and praise for the RedMagic Studio!

The cons …

The main critical issues of this smartphone concern all those elements that do not affect gaming performance such as cameras. Although the rear camera manages to give us good quality videos and photos, it is outclassed by many other models on the market. The front camera, on the other hand, has fallen behind for many, many years and will not give you any particular satisfaction.

We really have to think of the Redmagic 7S Pro as a versatile gaming console: who would think of taking a selfie with a tool with a thousand potential?

The REDMAGIC 7S Pro review in brief

The Redmagic 7S Pro turned out to be an excellent smartphone if you use it for what it was designed for: gaming. Each video game tested has fully met our expectations by setting, to our great satisfaction, the highest graphics and performance settings and we all know how important they are especially during competitive video games.

The differences from the previous model are small but effective and thought out for those who always want to get the best out of their games. And the best for your games is the new Redmagic 7S Pro.
