Roma-Napoli: dove vedere la partita?

The top 10 best films released in 2023

In this top 10 we show you which in our opinion are the best films released in 2023, both Italian and foreign

The seventh art, although now in unstoppable decline, remains a driving force for everyone’s habits and tastes. Let’s leave streaming platforms aside for a moment and see what the top 10 best films of the year are: from Oppenheimer to Barbie, from Killers of the Flower Moon to Mixed by Erry, here are all the titles we appreciated most in 2023.

10. Mixed by Erry | The 10 best films of 2023

Let’s start our ranking with an all-Italian film. Enrico Frattasio, known as Erry, has great success with his friends with his mixtape, so much so that he expands his business to the point of setting up a small business, which ends up giving rise to an international adventure. It all starts in the Naples of the 80s, in the shadow of the myth of Maradona, to arrive in the entrepreneurial Milan of the early 90s. Sydney Sibilia signs another comedy with a historical setting, once again on the theme dear to him of a life as a pirate or in any case outside the institutions. The director returns to the cinema, as in his trilogy I stop whenever I wantbut with a cast of debuting or little-known faces, alongside Fabrizio Gifuni, to give life to a very entertaining film that will certainly leave a positive mark in 2023.

9. The Whale | The 10 best films of 2023

And English teacher he lives as a recluse and takes online lessons without ever showing himself, hiding his own obesity. At risk of heart failure, the man is looking for redemption but still too inclined to indulge in compulsive binges to calm his anguish. The new, controversial, film by Darren Aronofskypresented in Venice, tries to do for Brendan Fraser what The Wrestler did for Mickey Rourke and reviews were almost unanimous in applauding the actor’s acting. Even if the film didn’t please everyone, it must be admitted that it is an excellent starting point for the past year. Based on the theatrical play of the same name by New Yorker Samuel D. Hunter, The Whale also reflects on the theme of guilt and does not lack the biblical elements so dear to the director.

8. The spirits of the island | The 10 best films of 2023

On a small island off the coast of Ireland, in the 1920s, Colm decides to break off his friendship with his best friend Pádraic, who can’t get over it. Colm is absolutely unreasonable and threatens to cut off his fingers if Pádraic doesn’t leave him alone. The man wants to dedicate his time to music and feels that chatting with his friend has now become an unproductive waste of time, which no longer brings him any pleasure. Come back Martin McDonaghthe director of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, who brings together the stars of his dazzling debut In Bruges: Brendan Gleeson e Colin Farrellsupported by Kerry Condon. Already winner in Venice for Farrell’s performance and the screenplay, he is certainly among the favorites in the Oscar race.

7. Barbie | The 10 best films of 2023

For the first half of the Barbenheimer in August, the first photos with the outfits on skates were enough Margot Robbie e Ryan Gosling and then the first teaser trailer with a quote from 2001: A Space Odyssey to excite the internet. What is surprising about the project is its direction Greta Gerwig, which until now had never embraced such a pop character. Margot Robbie also didn’t fail to underline how amazing the film is, declaring already in 2020 that whatever we were thinking, she would give us a completely different one. So it was, because beyond the enormous success at the box office, the film has undoubted qualities, establishing itself as a feminist manifesto that is at times sagacious in reversing the roles of Barbie and Ken, visually well designed and executed and with a development that is anything but discounted.

6. Oppenheimer | The 10 best films of 2023

The story of the director of the Los Alamos laboratory during the Manhattan Project which led to the development and subsequent use of the Atomic Bomb. This time Christopher Nolan he doesn’t choose a historical surname to tell something completely different like in Tenet and signs what should be a more or less traditional biopic. In the role of the protagonist, a gaunt man Cillian Murphyflanked by an impressive array of stars: Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh and also the director Benny Safdie. The film made headlines because Nolan, who notoriously doesn’t like computer graphics, chose to recreate the explosion of the famous Trinity nuclear test with a fireworks display of explosives. But above all it set the theaters on fire in August, marking at least for a moment a revival of cinema in theaters. Despite the mixed reviews (apart from the soundtrack, which everyone agreed on), we liked it: here you can find our review.

5. Adagio | The 10 best films of 2023

A story of revenge and redemption in today’s Rome: it would be a generic and uninspiring description if it weren’t for the return to the capital of Stefano Sollima, after his American and international stints with the series ZeroZeroZero and collaborations with Taylor Sheridan. For the conclusion of his ideal trilogy on criminal Rome, which began more than ten years ago with ACAB – All Cops Are Bastards and continued with Suburra, Sollima relies on an all-star Italian cast: Toni Servillo, Pierfrancesco Favino, Valerio Mastandrea and Adriano Giannini. The trusted screenwriter Stefano Bises and the director of photography Paolo Carnera also return alongside him to give life to a dystopian film set in a capital on the brink of collapse.

4. Asteroid City | The 10 best films of 2023

The latest film by Wes Anderson it’s as much a return to form as it is a thoughtful expansion of the director’s humanist impulses. Asteroid City, which tells the story of a diverse group of individuals, played by a stellar cast, stranded in a tiny desert town at the height of the atomic age, addresses the themes of mourning and loneliness, love and existential wonder. His enchanting series of dioramas contains a fascinating portrait of life in its almost totality, which contains all the absurdity and sweetness of life. Furthermore, Anderson’s structural preciousness is an undoubtedly appreciable quid pluris.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 | The 10 best films of 2023

The Guardians of the Galaxy have gained possession of the space station Knowhere and are trying to turn it into a place of asylum for all the outcasts of space. However, they suffer a brutal attack, linked to one of their own. If this is the premise, the film is actually mainly about the tragedy of Rocket and will see the High Evolutionary, who is its creator, as the villain. In a now more total chaos, in which Marvel produces some good products (especially TV series) and a good part of bad titles, James Gunn continues to be a beacon and leaves the shack concluding his trilogy (plus television special) dedicated to the Guardians, promising a more tragic tone this time, for a highly emotional ending, but still maintaining a high and balanced level between drama and comedy.

2. Killers of The Flower Moon | I 10 migliori film del 2023

Filming of the new film ended in October 2021 Martin Scorsese, based on a book by David Grann about a series of murders of Native Americans that, in the 1920s, were the focus of a major federal investigation. The film, which was initially a Paramount production, was largely rewritten in 2020 to give it a less commercial edge and moved to Apple TV+. In line with this new approach, DiCaprio asked and received not to play the FBI agent investigating the murders, but rather the nephew of the main suspect. The part of the agent was thus entrusted to Jesse Plemons, who had already worked with Scorsese on The Irishman. The move was a winner and Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro they are the absolutely bad protagonists of the story, which is interesting and confirms the talent of the three. Our review can only acknowledge this.

1. There’s still tomorrow | The 10 best films of 2023

Delia is one good housewife in post-war Rome: she keeps her basement clean, prepares meals for her husband Ivano and their three children, looks after her grumpy father-in-law and earns some money by mending linens, repairing umbrellas and acting as a home nurse. According to the men of her life, however, she has the flaw that she responds to, in an era in which women had to keep their mouths tightly shut. And Ivano considers it sacrosanct beat her and humiliate her for every one of his “shortcomings”. Luckily, Delia has some allies outside the house: a mechanic who loves her, a witty friend who encourages her, an African-American soldier who would like to lend her a hand. And above all, she has a secret dream, which blossomed from a surprise letter she received. A huge success, fully deserved, for this confirming film Paola Cortellesi like a lucid protagonist of our time.

Conclusions

There have been films in 2023, not always of great quality but we hope there will be a new spring for this type of content at the cinema. The hope, for now, is for a 2024 full of new appointments in cinemas.
