TikTok is the world’s most popular video app, with over a billion monthly active users. But its Chinese origin and its access to its users’ personal data have raised national security concerns in the United States and other countries. TikTok, the CEO promises a “firewall” to protect data
In 2020, the Trump administration had attempted to force the sale of TikTok’s US operations to an American company. The courts had blocked the proposal, which was later abandoned by the Biden administration. But in recent weeks, with the Chinese espionage doubts at the center of the US political discussion, the proposal is back in vogue.
Now the CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, has a message for Washington: a sale would not solve the safety concerns. And it would be against the interests of the app’s users and creators.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Chew said TikTok created a “firewall” between its global and Chinese data. According to the CEO, it uses separate servers and cryptographic systems. He also stated that TikTok does not share user data with ByteDancethe Chinese parent company of the app.
Chew added that TikTok is working for increase transparency on its video recommendation algorithm, which is considered one of the most advanced and engaging in the industry. He said TikTok is considering allowing outside experts to examine the source code of the algorithm and offer users more options to customize their feed.
Chew also defended TikTok’s advertising business model, saying the app doesn’t use sensitive user data to show targeted ads. And it predicts a bright future for the company, with several new features on the way that will give new possibilities to influencers. Anticipating higher earnings for American and European creators, while reassuring regulators about privacy.
