Does TikTok compete directly with YouTube? The hugely popular social network has announced that the videos will now be able to last up to 10 minutes.
Short videos on TikTok? Not necessarily: lengthened the maximum duration of the clips
TikTok is less and less a platform for short videos. In fact, the social network announced today that it is expanding the maximum duration for uploads up to 10 minutes. After all, the social network has been testing longer content uploads for years, introducing the possibility of sharing three-minute videos last July.
“We are always thinking of new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience,” a company spokesperson said in a statement released to The Verge. “Last year we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and enjoy on the app. Today we are thrilled to announce the ability to upload videos for up to 10 minutes. ” Some users have already received a notification alerting them to the news.
Longer videos allow the platform to better compete with YouTube (which makes long content its strong point). Don’t forget that long videos increase the overall usage time on the app. Ironically, as TikTok expands to offer longer content for creators and users, its rivals – spurred on by TikTok’s success – have done the opposite. Instagram has in fact launched short-form videos with the Reels and YouTube has introduced the Shorts. Snapchat also introduced Spotlight.
The analyst Matt Navarra told The Verge that longer content is, in general, “easier to monetize” and “keeps people on the platform longer.”
