Toto Cutugno, icon of Italian music in the world, passed away in Milan. Singer, author, he had also distinguished himself for the conducting of many TV programs
The famous Tuscan singer had just turned 80. A few hours ago however, the sad news, Toto Cutugno, died at the San Raffaele hospital in Milanafter a long illness. The news of his death was released by his manager Danilo Mancusowho underlined how Toto was himself worsened in recent monthsafter years of illness. The sad announcement has already gone around the world, leaving all those who loved his music speechless. So let’s retrace some stages of his brilliant career.
An extraordinary career | Toto Cutugno: farewell to the singer of “L’italiano”
Toto Cutugno, born on 7 July 1943 in Fosdinovo, in the province of Massa-Carrara, but soon moved to La Spezia, grew up with music in his blood. At nine he already plays the drum in a band, then switches to drums and accordion. It will be just as a drummer that he will begin his career in the first half of the 60s. He will switch to singing only after having formed the Albatrossin 1974, with which he will participate for the first time in the San Remo Festivalfinishing third with the song Volo AZ504.
It will be in 1976 that he decides to try the solo path, albeit with various difficulties. In fact, her first real success will come a year later, with the song Donna donna mia. These are the years in which he too begins to be recognized for his skills as a composer, creating pieces for other performers, both Italian and foreign, a name above all, Adriano Celentano. The 80s were full of successes for Cutugno and we certainly cannot fail to mention the piece that consecrated him to music, bringing his name to the new generations as well. We are obviously talking about The Italian; the song with which she, in 1983 she participated in Sanremo. The song was only ranked fifth, but it was a real success, imposing itself for weeks at the top of the Italian and European rankings, so much so that it was translated and recorded again, in different languages and becoming the symbolic song of Italian culture in the world.
In 1990, Toto Cutugno crossed another great goal, which only very few other Italians were able to reach: winning theEurovision Song Contest. The cantate succeeds with the song Together: 1992 which will lead him straight to the conduct of the event, the following year, paired with Gigliola Cinquettithe first Italian winner in history, in 1964. After them, only i Moonlight they succeeded in 2021.

Toto Cutugno’s talent doesn’t stop there. The artist has managed, with great ease, to switch from music to the conducting of highly successful TV programs. One for all, Domentica In, on Rai 1, in the 1987-1988 and 1992-1993 editions. Conducting this program opened the door for him to many other TV shows. In addition to the aforementioned management of theEurovision Song ContestRai has entrusted him with numerous TV programs over the years, from Tonight I throw myself and… three! (1992) a Your facts (1998-2000); and Telethon (1998-2000), passing through San Remo Summer (2004), al Castrocaro Festival (2004), up to his last television participation, in the guise of Coach, in the program Now or never (2019).
The artist’s funeral will take place Thursday 24 August at 11in the Parish Basilica of Saints Nereus and Achilles in viale Argonne 56, in Milan.
