Universal charging standard: new from the USA

The United States is considering establishing a universal charging standard for consumer electronics

As you already know, the legislators ofUE they agreed to make it USB Type-C (here for more info about it) the charging interface standard for the union. To date, it would appear that US senators are considering something similar. For now it’s just an idea, with just a letter written by a few Democratic senators al Secretary of Commerce. But the path to implementation is likely to be much longer than expected. The reasoning is very similar to that of EU lawmakers, that is reduce electronic waste and make life easier for consumers.

The US idea of the universal charging standard for electronics

The letter written by the American senators states that

the average consumer owns about three cell phone chargers. About 40% of consumers report that, on at least one occasion, their mobile phone could not be charged because the available chargers were incompatible.

He goes on to say that innovation should benefit consumers rather than going to their expense. Especially since consumers end up collecting incompatible and unusable chargers and connectivity cables. In reality, things are a bit more complex (as is often the case). But there’s really no reason why more standardized chargers can’t finally become the norm.

Especially now that with the computer and mobile phone industry it largely pushes for USB Type-C as a common connector, with very few exceptions. The extra incentive from the regulation should help speed things up, but it does standard USB it’s not as simple as politicians seem to think. This may cause some consumer complaints during the transition period. However, certified devices compliant with USB PD they should make everyone’s life easier in the long run. Time will tell if the Secretary of Commerce will agree with the senators and of course there is no guarantee that USB Type-C will be the standard of choice, regardless of the likelihood that it is.
