Vodafone, Qualcomm Technologies e Thales they unveiled the first working prototype of iSIM, a solution with which the aim is to permanently retire physical SIMs for smartphones. The new technology integrates the functionality of a SIM into the processor of a smartphone, thus allowing the elimination of the slot in which to insert the SIM card.
The new iSIM will lead to the farewell of physical SIMs
According to what clarified by the companies that promoted the project, the iSIM is a real evolution of the eSIM. By using processors with an integrated iSIM, in fact, there will no longer be the need to use a physical SIM card and it will be easier to change operator or phone number.
Vodafone has unveiled a first working model of iSIM with a prototype represented by a modified version of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC and a Thales iSIM operating system capable of managing the integrated card. Samsung’s R&D team also contributed to the development of the project.
Vodafone’s comment
Alex Froment-Curtil, chief commercial officer, Vodafone, commented on the new project: “Our goal is to create a world where every device connects simply and seamlessly, and the customer is in complete control. The iSim, combined with our remote management platform, is an important step in this direction, allowing devices to be connected without a physical sim or a dedicated chip, making connectivity to many objects a reality ”.
