Wallbox and Kia America introduce Quasar 2 for two-way charging on the EV9 model

By H1 2024, Quasar 2 will become the first EV charger capable of bi-directional charging on the Kia EV9 model

Wallbox is a leading provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging and energy management solutions; recently announced a collaboration with Kia America to introduce bi-directional charging technology to the Kia EV9 model. This partnership foresees the launch of Quasar 2, the first EV charger capable of bi-directional charging, by the first half of 2024.

Quasar 2, with a power of 11.5 kW, represents the next generation of bidirectional chargers. Allowing owners of electric vehicles to not only recharge their vehicle, but also use it as an energy source for their home (vehicle-to-home – V2H); or again, to contribute to the energy of the electricity grid (vehicle-to-grid – V2G).

Details on the new Quasar 2 for bidirectional charging on Kia EV9

Kia EV9, the specific vehicle in this collaboration, it is capable of storing between 76 and 100 kWh of energy; a significantly higher capacity than standard home energy storage systems. This allows the typical energy needs of a family to be met for a significant period.

An innovative aspect of Quasar 2 is the “Power Recovery Mode”. Quesat allows you to switch from the mains to the vehicle in the event of a power cut, using the vehicle’s battery as an emergency generator. This function becomes particularly relevant considering the growing number and ever-increasing duration of power outages, with a significant negative impact on the economy.

Second Enric Asunción, CEO and co-founder of Wallbox, qThis collaboration aims to advance accelerated electrification and redefine how we interact with energy. Bidirectional charging technology not only offers benefits to users, but also contributes to the transition to renewable energy sources. The goal is to make Quasar 2, paired with a vehicle like the Kia EV9, one of the most efficient and affordable home energy management solutions on the market.

Big savings

Wallbox estimates that by combining this technology with Demand Response programs and hourly rates, users could save over €800.00 per year on their energy bills. This approach allows users to optimize the use of V2H technology. By scheduling charging sessions based on energy prices and using the vehicle’s accumulated energy to power the home at times of greatest demand; reducing dependence on the grid and promoting the adoption of renewable energy, especially for those who use photovoltaic panels.
