M.2 SSD devices are high-speed solid-state media that PS5 beta users can install to upgrade the storage capacity of their PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition console (separate purchase required). Western Digital appears to be producing a proprietary SSD compatible with PS5 slots.
Why add an M.2 SSD to your PS5 console?
Once installed in the PS5 console, the M.2 SSD storage space can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as multimedia apps. This allows you to increase the storage space available on the PS5 console. Games can be moved freely between PS5 console storage, an attached USB extended storage device, and added M.2 SSD storage.
Which M.2 SSDs can be used with PS5? Is Western Digital okay?
It is important to use only a supported M.2 SSD (such as Western Digital’s) to expand the PS5 console’s storage. Make sure you are using an M.2 SSD that meets the requirements. As this is a beta version, please note that the final specifications may change before the official system software release.

If you encounter problems playing a game installed on the M.2 SSD, move the game to the internal memory of the Ultra-High Speed console.
Western Digital’s statement on PS5 SSDs
Western Digital released its statement regarding a proprietary SSD for PS5: “Based on the requirements published by Sony, we can confirm that our WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD with heatsink (500GB-2TB) meets the stated requirements for expand console storage on PlayStation 5 for those with access to PlayStation 5 Beta software. Compatibility tests are in progress. “
