What If…? the new Marvel animated TV series available on Disney Plus comes to its second episode, centered on T’Challa and her alternate universe as Star-Lord. Here is our review of What If…? episode 2.
ORIGINAL TITLE: What If… ?. GENDER: Superheroes. COUNTRY: United States. DIRECTOR: AC Bradley. DURATION: 9 episodes, 34 mins approx. DISTRIBUTOR: Disney +. RELEASE: August 18, 2021.
What If…? returns to Disney Plus with its second episode, after the pilot episode focused on Peggy Carter as Captain Carter, super soldier. Here, we see T’Challa at the center of the scene, not playing the role of Black Panther, but rather of Star-Lord. In fact, this episode hypothesizes that the leader of Wakanda becomes Star-Lord and this makes his world merge with that of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Certainly a curious and interesting juxtaposition, that of these two very different worlds and above all a T’Challa inserted in a context totally opposite to the one we are used to.
T’Challa outside the box | What If…? episode 2
Here, in fact, the protagonist is inevitably more relaxed, playful and provocative, as is the world of the Guardians and this is certainly the most interesting point of the episode. How a change of context and role can totally change the personality of a character. While in the first episode dedicated to Peggy Carter in the role of Captain Marvel, we have not seen this change of personality: Peggy Carter already has a strong personality and feminine strength in all the stories dedicated to her and we see this even when she becomes a super soldier.
The difference with Peter Quill, however, we see it, because T’Challa, as relaxed as he is, is not a selfish pirate who explores the galaxy, but as a good hero he steals artifacts that could help save the planets. However, these adventures lead him to re-establish contact with the space ship Wakandan and some aspects of its past and its origins.
Fun and engaging animation | What If…? episode 2
The animation of this episode is very engaging and once again, well done. The encounter with the world of Ravegers and Guardians of the Galaxy leads to a context full of colors with very bright and psychedelic tones. The tone of the narrative is also light-hearted and unconventional and mixes the two worlds it presents well. We are faced with an episode that on the whole is fun and works even if compared to the first it differs from the concept of classic “What If…”. Here, in fact, we are faced with a totally different reality and not with a small change that modifies events. Here there is a change that concerns the space of reference, the relational joints and the personality of the protagonist. Everything is certainly interesting from the point of view of entertainment, but it begins to create confusion with respect to the general concept.
Conclusion
In conclusion this episode 2 of What If…? it is good entertainment, a good puzzle game and able to activate the imagination and reasoning of all the fans of the Marvel world. The fact that two worlds are interlocked certainly sets in motion many interlocking and many further hypotheses. Surely we expect more from this mini series, especially from the point of view of the quality of the content and also from the message that is transmitted. So we just have to wait for the third episode and find out what the writers will show us.
T’Challa is a thoughtful Star-Lord
Points in favor
- Captivating animation
- Direction with a good pace
Points against
