WhatsApp started testing with a small number of users the new Community tab, which allows you to send messages to many users at the same time. A function that recalls the publication on social networks, or Discord servers or channels on Telegram. But for the company it is a way to facilitate communications between entities such as existing schools, offices and other communities.
WhatsApp tests the Community tab
WhatsApp has long aimed to be more than just a messaging app. It does a bit of e-commerce with the companies they use WhatsApp Businessa bit of social media with Stories. The new Community tab could work on both fronts.
In fact, the Community tab will allow you to send messages to thousands of users, hosting several group chats within it. The basic idea is that organizations such as schools or offices can organize discussions more easily. For example by sending the principal’s message to all class groups.
WhatsApp, however, is aware that this type of organization could make it easier to spread disinformation. So it puts standing some restrictions, like the fact that cannot be forwarded messages already forwarded to all groups.
Unlike Telegram channels or Discord servers, you will not be able to search for a Community with the function Research. Someone has to add yourself with your phone number. Which will remain hidden from everyone except the administrators and people in the subgroup you belong to, as is the case now. Also, only admins will be able to post.
WhatsApp wants this function to manage local communities or for workers’ organizations, categories of associations, etc. So he wants to give a tool to communities that are already present, not to contribute to creating them: a not insignificant difference compared to the social networks that Meta offers.
But he is still considering how to evolve this mechanism by listening to the user feedback who are testing it. At the moment no global launch in sight yet: we will keep you updated.
