Lewis Hamilton’s abandonment represents the end of a journey and a new beginning for Mercedes, perhaps with Sebastian Vettel, the German Formula 1 driver who has a great desire to compete
Toto Wolff was very disappointed with the abandonment of Lewis Hamilton, who will officially compete for Ferrari. Their collaboration lasted many years and the void that Hamilton created by moving to Ferrari is truly painful for both Wolff and Mercedes. According to Wolff, in fact, Hamilton would continue with them if he wanted, then abandonment was his choice, a choice that unfortunately Mercedes had to suffer. The other day Wolff called the over one thousand employees of the English headquarters of Mercedes F.1 in Brackley to communicate that the collaboration with Hamilton will end at the end of the season. Lewis himself was also there to say hello.
Sebastian Vettel’s return to Formula 1 with Mercedes
Hamilton’s abandonment represents the end of an era for Mercedes, now the British driver will face a new adventure with Ferrari with a smile and with hope for the future. First, however, he will race for Mercedes in one last world championship. As for post Hamilton, the period it has already begun. The young man George Russell, who grew up with Mercedes, will take the team on his shoulders. But the question always remains “Who will take Hamilton’s place?” Mercedes has many options, given that there are many drivers with contracts expiring at the end of the year, such as Esteban Ocon, Alexander Albon, Pierre Gasly, Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz himself, who was abandoned by Ferrari.
However there is another option: the return of Sebastian Vettel, who would return to Formula 1 thanks to Mercedes. The four times world championafter retiring at the end of 2022 after two disappointing years with Aston Martin, has expressed his desire to return to Formula 1. There have already been contacts withAudi, which will officially make its debut in 2026, after becoming a shareholder of Sauber. However, the German driver could also ask for a place in Mercedes, considering that the place Hamilton occupied will be free from next year. This collaboration was possible already in 2020, when Ferrari did not renew his contract, and at the time Wolff had shown interest in welcoming Vettel into the family.
