Will WhatsApp add reactions to messages?

The constant evolution of WhatsApp continues and the latest leaks suggest that the messaging platform is considering adding reactions to messages, as is the case in other similar apps.

It will be possible to add emoji reactions to messages on WhatsApp

Message reactions are nothing new and are part of many messaging platforms from iMessage to Google Messages, leaving WhatsApp as one of the few “big” messaging apps without the feature. But, according to WABetaInfo, we may soon be able to add reactions to messages sent by our friends and contacts.

Put simply, reactions to messages only allow you to add a set of emojis to the messages you receive. This is certainly not an indispensable feature or functionality, but sometimes it saves time when you simply need to notify that you have gotten the message, perhaps leaving a thumbs up. However, it’s not entirely clear whether any emoji will be used or, as with many other apps, only a default selection will be available.

Message reactions are not yet active on WhatsApp, but the feature would be under development and could soon arrive on iOS, Android and desktop according to WABetaInfo. In fact by analyzing the Android version of the app, they found a pop-up message which requires users to refresh the app to see a reaction to the message.

Surely the recent ability to transfer the entire chat and message history from iOS to Android, or the ability to chat from multiple devices is probably a much bigger novelty than the ability to add reactions to WhatsApp messages. In any case, this is a good news that will make many users happy who have been waiting for the functionality for a long time.
