Beau DeMayo, creator of the animated sequel about Marvel’s mutants, X-Men ’97, is no longer involved in the promotion of the show which will debut on Disney Plus
The website The Hollywood Reporter writes that, in the early days of last week, Marvel Studios e Beau DeMayo they agreed to end their collaboration. His email within the company was consequently deactivated, and the crew notified that he is no longer part of the project. L’account The creator’s Instagram, which provided updates on the animated series, has been deleted. Additionally, DeMayo will not be taking part in tomorrow’s series premiere.
No details about the reasons for the dismissal were disclosed. Marvel Studios declined to comment on the news. DeMayo was a major-label veteran, having also worked on the live-action Moon Knight show and helped write earlier drafts of the Blade script.
X-Men ’97: the creator’s surprise firing
Staff members were updated about this via email, but at this time neither Marvel nor DeMayo have released any statements regarding the reasons for the separation: a new and unexpected earthquake, in short, in a year that is proving to be anything but simple for the Studios. Yet DeMayo’s appointment was announced by Marvel in November 2021 with some excitement, as the writer brought his identity as a black, gay man to the project. He had stressed in interviews how his experience growing up as the adopted child of white parents with a Korean sister had made him particularly close to the X-Men characters and their struggles to be accepted by society.
X-Men ’97 presents the voices of the original cast of X-Men: The Animated Series along with new members. The series will debut on 20 March on Disney+. Despite DeMayo’s firing, X-Men ’97 should arrive on streaming in a week without any major hitches.
