Xiaomi presents Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition at MWC 2023. The latest technological innovation to explore the possibilities of wireless AR devices
Xiaomi, one of the world’s leading companies in the field of consumer electronics and smart devices interconnected by an Internet of Things (IoT) platform, announced at the Mobile World Congress 2023 its brand new technology concept, Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass. This cutting-edge technological innovation is Xiaomi’s first wireless AR glasses to use a distributed computing model, offering a retina display that adapts to the light environment. Thanks to enhanced connectivity with a smartphone with holder Snapdragon Spacesthe device enables innovative hand tracking, while also supporting a full range of applications for larger displays and offering innovations in device compatibility.
Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass: A low latency experience combined with a wireless design
Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition was designed with the individual experience in mind. Instead of relying on a wired connection to a host computing device, the device is designed with a weight of only 126g and adopts Xiaomi-developed high-speed interconnection circuits, in order to achieve high-speed data connection between smartphone and glasses AR. Platform based Snapdragon® XR2 Gen 1 and equipped with Xiaomi’s proprietary low-latency communication system, they are supported by the Snapdragon developer platform Spaces™ XR and offer wireless latency as low as 3ms between smartphone and glasses, along with a wireless connection with link latency as low as 50ms, comparable to wired solutions.
The AR glasses feature a lightweight design that incorporates a series of materials such as magnesium-lithium alloy, carbon fiber parts, and a self-developed silicon-oxygen anode battery, reaching a weight of only 126g, meant for minimize the weight for the wearer. Furthermore, thanks to the analysis of tens of thousands of samples of tracking data, the glasses have been precisely calibrated, taking into account details such as the center of gravity, the distance between the legs, the angle, the nose rest and others factors that contribute to improving the user experience.
Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass: display retina near-eye
To achieve seamless integration between digital and the real world, users need to perceive virtual objects as vividly and clearly as physical objects. Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass is among the first products in the industry to reach a display ‘Retina-level‘. When the angular resolution approaches 60, the human eye is in fact unable to distinguish the granularity and for this reason the PPD of Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass is 58, the closest value to this quality specification. Leveraging a free-form optical module comprising a pair of screens MicroOLEDXiaomi Wireless AR Glass is also equipped with free-form prisms that guide light to achieve clear image display and are capable of performing complex light refraction in a limited volume.
The optical module design of the AR Glass minimizes light loss and produces clear images with up to 1200nit brightness, providing a solid foundation for AR applications. Furthermore, AR Glass is equipped with electrochromic lenses capable of adapting to different light conditions. These lenses enable a dimming mode that offers an immersive experience when viewing content, while the transparent mode produces a more vivid AR experience that blends real and virtual elements.
Xiaomi AR Gesture Control: A more natural way to interact
Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass is equipped with an innovative ability to interact with micro-gestures, the result of an independent research and able to make the user interact with one hand, and with highly precise gestures. This type of interaction shows one of the directions that Xiaomi considers central to the future development of the relationship between man and computer. Xiaomi uses the user’s inner finger joints as the gesture recognition area for Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass. Direction is oriented by the second joint of the middle finger, while the second joint of the index finger represents the upward direction. Thumb swipe on forefinger is used to enter and exit applications. In the future, Xiaomi aims to enable scrolling and tapping operations through the random movement of the thumb on the palm.
The minimal gestures of Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass allows users to perform everyday app operations, such as selecting and opening applications, scrolling pages, and exiting apps to return to the home page, all without using the smartphone for controls. Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass incorporates a AON camera with low energy consumption that allows for prolonged gestural interaction and facilitates functions. Additionally, users can also opt for traditional smartphone controls, which can be paired and used as gesture or touchpad controls.
Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass: A new and more connected experience for AR glasses
Xiaomi’s extensive experience in the interconnection between devices has allowed many experiences in this aspect to be incorporated into the wireless AR glasses. The device supports a number of large screen applications available across the ecosystem, thanks to the application streaming capability of Mi Share. In addition, AR functionality allows users to place popular applications anywhere in the display space and adjust the size of the interface using spatial gestures, thus improving the efficiency and overall experience of accessing information. Xiaomi has integrated AR to provide a unique experience for users.
Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition requires pairing with Xiaomi 13 or another Snapdragon Spaces-enabled device. The glasses come in a titanium-colored design, support three sizes of nose pads and come with an optional nearsighted clip. Xiaomi intends to work closely with developers to accelerate the arrival of AR. What do you think of the new Xiaomi devices?
