The Chocobo Racing sequel you don’t expect: the new GP is Square-Enix’s exclusive Switch shown at Nintendo Direct in September
Out of nowhere, one of the ads from the Nintendo Direct of September (which we summarized tonight) it was Chocobo GP. There are three reasons why we would never, ever expect such an announcement. Let’s start from the premise: this is a sequel (or at least pseudo-remake, but with new playable characters) of Chocobo Racing, a classic Final Fantasy spinoff from the PlayStation era. The second reason is that a remake of the aforementioned experiment was among the titles considered for Nintendo 3DS, but that in the end unfortunately never saw the light.
The Chocobo GP surprise in Nintendo Direct in September
The most interesting point, then, is that Chocobo GP made a debut in Nintendo Direct in September that it could not have made elsewhere. Despite being a Square-Enix title, in fact, the game is (currently) planned solo per Switch. The basic premise has remained the same as always: the gameplay formula is that of any one kart racer, but to spice things up are the power-ups. If you have played the original title for PS1, you should remember the use of the magic of Final Fantasy during the races, between circuits inspired by the flagship franchise of the Japanese publisher.

In addition to the classic Chocobo, Mog, Black Magician (Croma), White Maga (Shirma), Behemoth and company, new faces will also be added to the cast of the original. In the presentation trailer alone, Gilgamesh and Ramuh peeped out, and for sure we will know more in view of the release of this title. For now, the only constant is the year of release, which as you can guess will be next. We therefore look forward to the 2022 to understand what content will return from the original (such as Cid’s test track, albeit reworked) and what new features will catch us off guard.
