After Frida Kahlo, the second event film in the series ART ICONS, the series of documentaries dedicated to the undisputed icons of the art world distributed to the cinema by Adler Entertainment, starring Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most loved artists of all time. The docufilm of David Bickerstaff offers an unprecedented vision of the life and works of the Dutch painter through his famous “Sunflowers”, among the most famous and appreciated paintings in the world. What many mistake for a single masterpiece are actually five potted sunflower paintings scattered across galleries in Amsterdam, London, Munich, Philadelphia and Tokyo. David Bickerstaff’s documentary brings together this spectacular series of paintings on the big screen in a way never seen before. Working closely with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Van Gogh – I Girasoli it is not a simple “virtual exhibition”. Let’s talk about a suggestive cinematic journey able to delve into the rich and complex stories behind each painting, trying to unravel the mysteries of sunflowers and also offering a new insight into the tragic circumstances that led Van Gogh to quarrel with Paul Gauguin.
What did these flowers mean to Van Gogh and why do they resonate so much with today’s audiences? What were you trying to say with these works and how does one version differ from another? Seeing them this way gives you an unparalleled and startling new understanding of the life and work of the probably most popular artist in the world. By putting them together on the big screen, you can compare them closely and see the differences of each one. It was such a joy to witness how unique each version was, proof of Van Gogh’s exuberance for experimentation. “
