FOR THE 2022 JUNIOR WRC TITLE

EA Sports Inc. made its entry into the pinnacle of rally motorsports by sponsoring Codemasters developer Jon Armstrong’s race for the 2022 Junior WRC title.

The new team, made up of the Northern Irish duo Jon Armstrong and co-driver Brian Hoy, will make its debut on the weekend between 25 and 27 February in Sweden, before the race weekends in Croatia, Portugal, Estonia and Greece. Fans will be able to follow the action and get exclusive behind-the-scenes content, including the reveal of the car, through the channel Twitter at Rally.

The Junior WRC continues to be one of the premium championships on the calendar, exclusively dedicated to drivers under 30. Having been defeated in his first JWRC championship last season, Jon has the ambition to do better as the drivers race in identical ‘Ford Fiesta Rally3’ model cars – all supplied by M-Sport Poland. Set in five locations on the Old Continent, the JWRC confirms the setting skeleton of the WRC race weekend, with the drivers tackling the same stages and routes.

Jon Armstrong, 27, turned pro in 2015. He finished second in last season’s JWRC, losing to Finland’s Sami Pajari in the final weekend. In addition to working full time at Codemasters as a game designer and rally consultant, Jon is known in the esports scene for winning the 2018 Esports WRC Championship. Co-driver, Brian Hoy, has a wealth of experience, having previously competed in the JWRC and the European Championship.

“This year, we all hope that Jon can improve on last season’s incredible performance and take the title”, said Ross Gowing, Senior Creative Director at Codemasters. “The experience he has gained will keep him in a good position for the coming season, and everyone at Codemasters and EA SPORTS fully supports him.”

“I was so close to winning last season, and I’m confident I can do better,” said Jon Armstrong. “I am eternally grateful to EA SPORTS for giving me their full support, and I can’t wait to get to Sweden and start the 2022 Junior WRC season.”
