Much has been speculated in recent years about a possible and renewed partnership between BMW and McLaren with the aim of reviving one of the most iconic sports cars in history: the McLaren F1. Apparently, and according to some rumors reported by the BMW Blog, this alliance could bear fruit in generating a new specific platform for making electric sports cars.
In the 1990s, BMW and McLaren signed a commitment to create the most spectacular supercar the world has ever seen. However, a production model never came from that launch. However, the relationship between the two automakers could recur, as both would be in talks to initiate development of a complete new architecture for an upcoming electric sports car.
This rumor comes from a leak released a few days ago in which, apparently, on March 24, both brands signed a collaboration memorandum to carry out this alleged joint development task.
In the partnership between BMW and McLaren Volkswagen could be the third wheel
However, such an agreement would not be binding and could be canceled at any time and by either party, as, according to sources close to the brands, McLaren could be in talks with the Volkswagen Group to, among other things, jointly enter Formula 1 with Audi as the main bidder.
In other words, it is a must to take the rumor about the new joint development of an electric sports car between BMW and McLaren with a grain of salt. In fact, if the English house signed the agreement with Audi, this agreement would become “waste paper” immediately.
It is unclear whether both companies would plan to develop a single model or platform which, as such, could lead to the creation of more than one. The rumors circulating in the environment speak of a possible spiritual replacement for the BMW Z4 in the form of an electric car, as well as a flexible platform that could accommodate several models of the same brand. At the moment, neither company has confirmed the rumors, so we simply have to stick to the rumors and the possibilities this generates.
BMW left the world of electrified sports cars when it ceased producing the i8 several years ago. Certainly a natural replacement for that spectacular model is expected but, for the moment, we cannot speak of dates or possible confirmed alliances. There has been a lot of speculation on the part of McLaren about the launch of an all-electric model, however there are no confirmations of arrival either, as today the Woking brand is focused on launching other models such as the Artura its latest huge hybrid supercar. plug-in.
