Below is the official press release that released the Biennale:

Venice International Film Festival (31 August – 10 September 2022). The decision was made by the Board of Directors of the Venice Biennale, which adopted the proposal of the Director of the Exhibition Alberto Barbera
Barbera on Paul Shrader and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement
And just the words of Alberto BarberaDirector of the Venice Film Festival, were:
Schrader is a central figure of New Hollywood who revolutionized the imagery, aesthetics and language of American cinema starting in the late 1960s. It is no exaggeration to say that he is one of the most important American authors of his generation, a filmmaker deeply influenced by European cinema and culture, a stubbornly independent screenwriter, but capable of working on commission and moving with ease in the system. Hollywood. The audacious visual stylization that informs all of his works places them among the most modern forms of a cinema that is not reconciled and subtly investigating contemporaneity. A contemporaneity with which Schrader confronts himself not only with tireless intellectual and human curiosity, but also with a surprising ability to navigate the technological evolution of cinema and that of its production and distribution system. Thanks to this recklessness – which not many authors of his level dare, in the mature phase of their work – Schrader not only continues to work, but has given us some of his finest films in recent years.
The Hollywood director and screenwriter commented on the honor that will be granted to him:
I am deeply honored. Venice is my Lion of the heart
So we just have to wait for the awards ceremony and, in the meantime, go and retrieve all the films of the great and talented Paul Shrader.
