Hope is the last to die. After a disappointing fourth episode from all points of view, Obi-Wan Kenobi comes back with what had conquered us in the first instance. The episode begins with heart sank. We see Anakin and Obi-Wan at the time of Episode II – Attack of the Clones, where the former was still a rebellious Padawan, with a pigtail and braid. The two face off in a duel training and this will be the background and parallel to the plot of the episode. In fact, let’s see how Vader is on the tracks of Obi-Wan, thanks to the transmitter positioned on the droid LOLA, and is about to reach him on Jabiim, outpost of the Resistance. Here the Jedi master organizes a defense against the imperial forces and, when they arrive, tries to understand the true intentions of the Third Sister.

I flashback at the time of the prequel trilogy, in which Anakin and Obi-Wan were nothing more than apprentice and teacher are a real gift to fans. After four episodes in which Vader represented only evil and Obi-Wan was almost a shadow of himself, seeing them in their original splendor has a certain effect. The narrative of the episode takes full advantage of this parallelism, thanks to the editing and the succession of events. That duel represents the sum of the personalities of the two Jedi: on the one hand, Obi-Wan is wiser, navigated the way of the Force and understands his own limits and those of the opponent; on the other, Anakin is more impulsive, ferocious and is blinded by his power in order to achieve victory. This pattern is repeated throughout the episodewhere Vader repeats the same mistakes of the past and Obi-Wan proves not as rusty as in the first fight with the Sith Lord.
Action and twists | Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 5 review
The episode itself flows much more fluid and captivating compared to that of last week. If episode 4 represents the low point of the series, then 5 is an excellent restart. The action returns to an acceptable level, with an excellent final duel. Even the outcome of the confrontation between Vader and Obi-Wan is anything but obvious: the parallelism with the duel of Attack of the Clones makes it unpredictable, as well as exciting. The story of Reva, while easy to imagine after the flashback of the first episode, still represents a plot twist interessante, although it also leaves behind some questions about what we have seen so far. The conclusion opens the door to a last spectacular episode, in which it is reasonable to expect the final duel between Obi-Wan and his old Padawan.
Conclusions
With this fifth episode, Obi-Wan Kenobi shakes off last week’s dust. The action of the first episodes is back, the drama and references to the past well contextualized. The parallelism with the Obi-Wan duel – Anakin is a smart choice, albeit not particularly innovative. The evolution of the protagonist it is actually in progress and we can see how doubts about what to do and about himself still live in him. Some twist between the ranks of enemies enriches the narrative e it makes the imperial ranks less flat which, apart from Vader, did not depart from his gray representations provided in the films of the main saga. The episode is a great appetizer of what the ending will have in store for us, even if the stain of the fourth episode remains, which it is now possible to identify as a wasted opportunity to tell more.
