House of the Dragon - season 2: what do we know so far?

Where does the second season of House of the Dragon start

The starting point dates back to about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and follows the events that led to the fall of the Targaryen house, 172 years before the birth of the last Targaryen, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). If in the first season we saw the power struggles that pitted supporters of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and those of the son of King Viserys (Paddy Considine), Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) against each other. , we can expect Season 2 to further raise the bar, especially after the dramatic finale of the previous one. The end of the civil war for power, in fact, marks nothing but the beginning of new even more bloody clashesas series co-creator and co-showrunner Ryan Condal pointed out, who called the showdown in season one a point of no return.

Effectively, Just five days after the pilot episode aired, HBO had already renewed the House of the Dragons series for a second season. Interviewed by Variety, Ryan Condal specified that the filming of the new episodes will begin in early 2023. The Spanish newspaper Hoy (via Watchers on the Wall) reports that the production will return to Cáceres (which was used as a set for King’s Landing in the first season) around April / May. Production will last until at least mid-2023, so it is likely that the release date of House of the Dragon season 2 will be set in the second half of 2024, probably with a good portion of the cast confirmed.

However, there will be a major change behind the scenes, given the farewell of co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik, who also directed many episodes of Game of Thrones and will remain only as an executive producer. In return, another Game of Thrones veteran, Alan Taylor, will be involved as executive producer and director of some episodes for next season. What will change all this in the development of the plot? We will find out in the coming months!
