Qualcomm announces Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 for smart glasses
In these days of the Summit, Qualcomm is announcing all its new hardware platforms that will power smartphones, tablets, smartwatches. But Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 will power a category of emerging devices: smart glasses that support augmented reality.
Already several companies like Lenovo, LG, OPPO, Sharp, TCL, Tencent e Xiaomi they are bringing these devices to market, having already made commercial devices in some cases. But this platform will make it easier to feed them. Indeed the PCB board is 40% smaller, allowing the chips to be inserted into smaller and thinner devices.
At the same time, consumption does reduce by 50% and AI performance multiplied by 2.5x. These data are in comparison to the XR2 platform, which was therefore also designed for virtual reality. But for products that simply add digital elements to the real world, you can get the required powers too below 1W.
As in the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 smartphone chip, we also find a chip FastConnect 7800 which enables the reception of the Wi-Fi 7. This also allows most of the calculation to be downloaded to a smartphone connected to the internet (or to a PC or dedicated device), with a latency of only 2 milliseconds.
This platform allows to support up to 9 cameras to analyze space, making the AR more realistic. And the big advantage of this presentation at the Snapdragon Summit is that developers will all be able to use the same platform to design experiences, facilitating the diffusion of AR.
At the moment, no official announcement of upcoming AR glasses: the builders are taking their time. But in the coming months (perhaps already at CES 2023 in January) we will be able to see some new features. We will keep you informed.
