You sure didn’t expect to see one review of a title that has already been out for some time, but ours Nintendo Switch calendar this is exactly what it proposes: to spend the Advent along with a slew of daily views, starting with Chocobo GP. Since there is already a rating of the game, we briefly summarize the premise of this series for you. Taking a cue from the British youtuber Caddicarus, the writer took the opportunity to visit some titles for the hybrid console not reviewed by him, or revisit them after the original article was written. Let’s point it out just this once!
Chocobo GP, first review of the Nintendo Switch Calendar
With Chocobo GP, Square-Enix tries to have its say with a kart racer who revisits his lost pearl for PS1, Chocobo Racing. Deserving a place in the top 25 of yours truly is not a trivial matter, but the competition (as you will see in the coming weeks) for the genre does not compromise. Square-Enix wanted to leverage the emerging free-to-play sector by also launching a Lite version, but forgetting on day one to apply discounts to those who bought the full version. By now the publisher has taken a step back, supporting the game after launch with good fanservice (free for first-hour buyers) but with little else.
What remains is a Final Fantasy on wheels, but also under cube root in the technical depth of kart racers. The story mode does its best to dilute the charm of the series in the toy context of the Chocobo sub-franchise, but (accomplices the few trips outside the comfort zone of role-playing games) it fails in the canons of “caciarone competitions”. Witness the scarcity of options in local multiplayer, in which the flood of cosmetics, characters and vehicles to be unlocked exclusively in the eponymous online battle royale-like lacks a bit of raison d’etre. For what it is, though, it remains a valid exponent of the genre. Not a viable alternative, but all in all a worthy specimen.
