Fantasy (of the fans) in power: the Christmas Eve review is that of the “car keys” in the Super Mario Maker 2 editor
Best wishes and Happy Christmas Eve to all of you who have followed ours Advent Calendar (and welcome newcomers) to review of today, that of Super Mario Maker 2. Although in possession of it (and, proudly, only for a few months), the writer did not feel like rewarding New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with a place in the ranking. Not with the choice (bordering on cheating) to reveal today’s game only after re-releasing the Wii U launch platformer. Which remains to all intents and purposes the pinnacle of the New series. However, if there is one mustache platformer that prevails over all the others, it is one that it never ends. To amaze, to amuse, and… it never ends, period.
Super Mario Maker 2, twenty-fourth and penultimate review of the Nintendo Switch Calendar
Already from the first trailer of the game, Nintendo has made sure to include one of the most requested features in the previous chapter: the slopes. From then on, it became clear how many reins in level design that the Big N put in the hands of fans with more confidence. L’editor includes more levels, nocturnal variants with altered background elements, more enemies, more minibosses, more powerups, vertical maps. In a move that has cast uncertainty on the ports of Super Mario 3D World (until its announcement) is the presence of the latter among what, in a still unjustified use of the plural, are “additional styles”.
We have long dreamed of seeing others, to no avail. Even now that the dust has settled and the game is no longer news, though, the community stays alive. Enabling some fans to develop a game like Sonic Mania did is one thing. Giving everyone the ability to create levels is another. The game gets talked about in the magazines only in the most striking cases, the last of which is the fan who after years of work has actually created a real Super Mario Bros. 5. We are concerned about the sense of purpose involved in the added features, but we also find it comforting to see that enough of them are missing to justify the evolution of Maker as serie. Unfortunately the game almost lacks raison d’etre without the online. As a platformer, however, he remains the best Mario on console hands down. The multiplayer localethen, is the recipe for a wonderful disaster.
