March 8 is approaching and so is International Women’s Day. Netflix is preparing to celebrate the annual celebration of the female universe with a long series of films and TV series starring women who have struggled to assert one’s worth in times or societies where gender inequality was the norm, or female figures who have set records. From aspiring detectives, able to stand up to much more well-known brothers, such as the young Enola Holmes, to women who fought for their rights in environments dominated by male presence, such as the Italian lawyer Lidia Poët.

When the rebellious Elisabeth (“Sisi”) meets the Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph, the intoxicating love of the couple completely overturns the hierarchy of power at the Viennese court. After the wedding, the young empress has to assert herself not only against her mother-in-law Sofia, a power-hungry sovereign, but also with her brother-in-law Maxi, who wants the throne (and also Sisi). While enemy troops gather on the border of the Habsburg Empire, the Viennese rebel against the emperor. Elizabeth must find out who she can trust and what is the price to pay for being a true empress and an example of hope for the people.

Fresh off the success of her first solved case, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) decides to follow in the footsteps of his famous brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and opens his own detective agency, discovering that life as a contract detective is not without its problems. Resigned to accepting the frigid reality of adult life, the young girl is about to close shop when a match girl offers her her first real assignment: to find her missing sister. But the case is more complex than expected and Enola finds herself in a world full of dangers, from sinister factories and lively London auditoriums to high society up to 221B Baker Street. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a prequel to the Bridgerton Is universe focused on Queen Charlotte’s rise to power and fame. The series tells how the young queen’s marriage to King George is the basis of a great love story and a social change thanks to which the world of high society of Bridgerton was born.
Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, The Queen of Chess is both a miniseries and a coming-of-age story that explores the price of brilliance. Growing up in a Kentucky orphanage in the late 1950s, young Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) discovers she has an incredible talent for chess as she develops an addiction to the tranquilizers the state gave to children as sedatives. Tormented by her own demons and driven by a mixture of narcotics and obsessions, Beth is transformed into an eccentric figure, extremely skilled and glamorous, determined to overcome the traditional boundaries of the purely male world of chess competitions. The series is directed and written by two-time Academy Award nominee Scott Frank, and executive produced by Frank himself, William Horberg and Allan Scott, who is also the co-creator.
