EA, the CEO on the acquisition of Codemasters: the studio will keep its identity

EA CEO Andrew Wilson recently commented on the company’s acquisition of Codemasters, confirming the line followed also with Respawn Entertainment

During last December, Electronic Arts acquired Codemasters (creators, among others, of the F1 series) “snatching” it from Take Two Interactive. The formalization came only in February 2021, accompanied by the astronomical figure of 1.2 billion dollars (Nothing compared to the 7.5 billion that Microsoft had to pay out for Bethesda, but so be it). And as with any acquisition, especially when it comes to Electronic Arts, the next step is to worry about the size of the company being acquired.

In a recent interview with VGC, Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts, would have commented on the acquisition of Codemasters and the fears that arose immediately after. The CEO allegedly claimed that the publisher has no intention of changing the studio and would like to encourage its independence, just as done with Respawn Entertainment, the creators of Apex Legends.

EA CEO’s full statement on the acquisition of Codemasters

Andrew Wilson allegedly stated:

Just like we did with Respawn, our intent is not to overwhelm Codemasters; our intent is not to turn Codemasters into another Electronic Arts studio; our intent is oriented in the sense of opportunity. This industry is based on an incredible creative talent. And it wouldn’t make sense to try to indoctrinate that creative talent. We just want to give them a way to access the things we own because of our position in the industry.

The response from Codemasters CEO Frank Sagnier was not long in coming:

EA takes us to new heights with sales, marketing power, live services expertise, state-of-the-art analytics service, EA Access, EA Play, Origin – an absolute overall wealth that EA brings to us in terms of services.

Frank Sagnier

These are the words of the two CEOs: on the one hand EA, with its infinite bag full of money, and on the other Codemasters, a leading company in the production of racing games. What will come of it in the future no one can know, but the premises seem to be quite good. What do you think of it?
