Similarly to what is already happening on Telegram, Meta is about to introduce the possibility of starting chats with the official WhatsApp account. The feature, whose launch has been confirmed by WABetaInfo, is already active for some selected users and will be spread globally in the coming weeks. We therefore advise you to keep the app updated so as not to miss out on this new feature.
What is the chat with the official WhatsApp account for?
As mentioned, the functionality incorporates what is already available on Telegram and Viber). Users will then be able to chat with the platform’s official account, which will periodically send updates and suggestions for using WhatsApp. However, if you find WhatsApp messages invasive, you can easily silence them, archive them or even block the account.
It’s currently unclear how many users already have the ability to try out the feature, or when it will go live for everyone. However, we know that this will arrive for both iOS and Android users around the world.
In the meantime, the “I miss you a lot” scam is spreading on WhatsApp. This requires cybercriminals to send messages to victims with phrases such as “we haven’t heard in a while, this is my new number, write me here”. The messages contain a malicious external link that allows scammers to steal victims’ personal data.
