After its success in Japan, The Boy and the Heron is about to arrive in Italy too and we finally have a trailer. Let’s find out
Everything is ready for the release in Italy of The boy and the heronthe new production of Studio Ghiblidirected by the famous Hayao Miyazaki. The film, already released in Japan, was the subject of an unusual and certainly courageous choice by the director, that of releasing the film without the use of any promotional material. A risky choice we would say, but which nevertheless proved effective; the film indeed achieved a huge success in his homeland. We Italians would not enjoy the same aura of mystery as the Japanese public, because now we have at our disposal, in addition to numerous images, also a trailer.

The world of cinema did not believe the results achieved by a film about which almost nothing was known were possible. Yet Hayao Miyazaki succeeded. The Boy and the Heron, based on the novel How Do You Live? Of Genzaburô Yoshino, released in Japanese cinemas in July, hit the box office, breaking Studio Ghibli’s previous records. Upon its release, very little was known about the film. The plot, very generic, told of a boy, Mahito, and his relationship with his friends and uncle and his incredible friendship with a talking gray heron, met in an abandoned tower, in the new city to which he had moved. The success of the film is probably also due to the fact that it is the last project completed by Miyazaki, created with the aim of saying goodbye to his niece, who one day, inevitably, he will have to leave.
The release date
The Boy and the Heron will finally be available in Italian cinemas, with Lucky Red, starting January 1, 2024. It remains only to understand how to approach the film: with the awareness of knowing what awaits us, thanks to the trailer capable of providing some small preview, or respecting the director’s wishes and showing up in the theater without any kind of knowledge about it.
