The Game Awards are upon us and the most appreciated titles by critics and audiences have already been nominated for the GOTY, but Starfield has been completely excluded from the GOTY category
The tenth edition of biggest videogames event (comparable to the Oscar awards ceremony for films) will arrive as usual in December. The creator of the Game Awards, Geoff Keighleyannounced (in a completely predictable manner) the following titles: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4: Remake e Super Mario Bros. Wonder in the GOTY category, but Starfield, Bethesda’s new title, was completely excluded from the category. Other titles have received merit nominations, such as Pizza Tower for the best indie category, Lies Of P for best artistic direction and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor e Final Fantasy XVI were nominated for best action adventure and best RPG respectively. Starfield instead it only has one nomination in the best RPG category.
Why was Starfield excluded from GOTY?
The news obviously caused a sensation, disappointing fans of the game and many have wondered why Starfield doesn’t fall into the GOTY category. The creator of the Game Awards, Keighley, commented on this in a post on X (Twitter),
I want to remind you that the nominees were chosen by a global jury from over 120 media communities. I don’t vote, but I have the immense pleasure of introducing you to all the nominees!
It’s unclear whether Keighley’s neutral stance will be in line with the nominees’ and winners’ statements at the event. Meghna Jayantha narrative designer at Thirsty Suitors and other titles, could not comment on the conflict between Palestine and Israel ai Golden Joystick Awards. Event organizers said no political comments were allowed at the event, which led the narrative designer to leave the awards ceremony in a gesture of protest. Joel’s voice actor from The Last Of Us, Troy Baker, attended in his place for the same category, without mentioning the conflict. In short, many complicated issues also arise in the world of video games, including layoffs, protests and communities.
