A few weeks after its release in cinemas, a box office record was broken by Super Mario Bros.
The record-breaking run of Super Mario Bros. continues – the animated feature film from Nintendo and Illumination that brought its US box office gross to $560 million and the worldwide box office to $727 million, for a total of well $1.288 billion. These receipts have allowed it to become the second highest-grossing animated film ever at the box office, surpassing even Frozen – The kingdom of ice, a 2013 Disney animated film that closed its run at $1.284 billion. At the top of this ranking remains, probably unattainable, its sequel Frozen II – The secret of Arendelle, with the incredible figure of $1.45 billion.
Among the blockbuster films we could also consider the live action remake of The Lion King signed by Jon Favreau, which in light of its 1.663 billion dollars collected worldwide would make it the first in this special ranking. Super Mario Bros. – The film in the meantime has officially entered the top 20 of the highest-grossing films in the history of cinema, placing itself at the nineteenth position, and is the first film of videogame origin to succeed in the enterprise.
Record-breaking Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. is a well-known platform video game developed and published in 1985 by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, is the first title in the series. The game has sold over 40 million copies on the NES and the theme music of its first level is also famous. The gameplay has been imitated by a number of later platform video games. While not the first appearance of the character, with the release of the game his celebrity has increased significantly.
The film was directed by Aaron Horvath e Michael Jelenic, while the screenplay was instead edited by Matthew Fogel. The voice cast for the original language edition of the film sees Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-JoyCharlie Day, Jack BlackKeegan-Michael Key e Seth Rogen. As for the Italian edition, the plumber’s Italian voice was lent by Claudius Santamaria.
