According to Gian Freaking Robot’s sources, Netflix is working on an anime series based on FromSoftware’s first Dark Souls
The streaming giant par excellence would have kicked off the production of an adaptation in the vein of Castlevania. In fact, Netflix would seem to have reached a agreement with Kadokawa and FromSoftware for the making of an animated adaptation of Dark Souls, the award-winning dark fantasy video game from 2011. The news was previewed by the US newspaper Giant Freakin Robot, which only a few hours ago gave the information for granted, stating that it came from reliable sources close to the editorial staff. The magazine is not new to this type of rumors, and so far it has proved to be relatively reliable, even if several initially bombastic rumors have since fallen on deaf ears.
According to sources, the Dark Souls series should adapt the events told in the game, and therefore it wouldn’t be a prequel or some kind of Castlevania-style reinterpretation. However, it would have been precisely the success of the latter that prompted Netflix to ask for the rights to the adaptation. Fans can therefore expect a mature and engaging product, with first-rate animations.
A Netflix series dedicated to Dark Souls?
Giant Freakin Robot has not revealed further information on the animated series which, however, should not see the light in the short term. Recently, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco had expressed interest in making films or TV series of Elden Ring, the latest game of the studio created in collaboration with the writer George R.R. Martin, which also from a narrative point of view seems to offer more interesting ideas for an adaptation of this genre. The decision to focus on Dark Souls seems decidedly less congenial, but that doesn’t make it impossible. We’ll see if the rumors are confirmed by the facts.
